New Music Monday! Fifth Harmony's Deluxe "Reflection"

categories: ,

"I can feel a wave beginning behind this group," said The X Factor creator and judge Simon Cowell before Fifth Harmony performed their version of Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" on the show last year. The music mogul knows talent and chemistry when he sees it. (This is, after all, the man who assembled One Direction.) Cowell decided that individual contestants Dinah Jane Hansen, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, and Camila Cabello were too special to let go, so at the end of the show's Boot Camp week, the five young women became Fifth Harmony. With their show-stopping vocals, undeniable charisma, and genuine sisterly bond, the "fearsome fivesome" (as they became known) endeared themselves to viewers across the country. Get their new deluxe-edition "Reflection" today!

Tibetan Buddhist Nun Chodron

In 2003, the Venerable Thubten Chodron founded Sravasti Abbey, one of the only U.S. monasteries where women can devote themselves to Tibetan Buddhism and become fully ordained. According to Huffington Post, the abbey in 2014 consecrated Chenrezig Hall, a $2 million lodge that houses the dining facilities as well as libraries, workrooms, meeting rooms, chapel and guest quarters.
Most of the nuns are from the U.S. and converted to Buddhism as adults. She is the only female monastic to pen a book with the Dalai Lama — “Buddhism: One Teacher, Many Traditions” (Wisdom Publications, 2014) — and is admired for writing texts about practical ways people can apply the Buddha’s teachings to their daily lives, says the article.

Big Demand For New Autobiography by "Little House" Author Laura Ingalls Wilder

Laura Ingalls Wilder is one of the great American storytellers. Millions of people in the United States and beyond have read her “Little House” books. Beloved by many, her writing has stood the test of time. But her own words about her own life—her autobiography—have been hidden in repositories and archives, accessible only to those who know . . . until now. The Pioneer Girl Project is dedicated to the process of researching and publishing a comprehensive edition of Pioneer Girl, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s autobiography.

Nancy Tystad Koupal, director of the South Dakota State Historical Society Press. She tells NPR's Melissa Block that the initial print run of 15,000 was snapped up in just a few weeks. So was an additional run of 15,000 more copies. Now, the historical society is waiting on a third run of 45,000 books — enough to fill current demand and have some leftovers.

"This book offers an opportunity to get behind the scenes and see what that life was really like," Koupal says. Like the time that Wilder was caring for a woman and found herself in a compromised position with the woman's husband. "The young man was drunk and came into her bedroom and she challenged him and he left. So it was — I would suppose you'd say — a near miss."

Church of England's First Female Bishop!

categories: ,
The Rt Revd Libby Lane has been consecrated as the first female bishop in the Church of England in a packed service at York Minster today attended by more than 100 bishops from the Church of England and women bishops from across the Anglican Communion. In a statement shortly after being consecrated, Bishop Libby said she had been encouraged by the thousands of messages of support she has received since the news of her appointment was announced.

She said, "Archbishop Sentamu has observed, "the way that we show our faith and our love for one another is with two simple things, prayer and parties." Today is an occasion of prayer and of party - and I am thrilled that so many want to share in both. I cannot properly express how encouraged I have been in the weeks since the announcement of my nomination, by the thousands of messages I have received with words of congratulation, support and wisdom."

Born as Elizabeth Jane Holden in Wycombe Rural District, Buckinghamshire, and raised in Glossop, Derbyshire, Lane was educated at Manchester High School for Girls, an independent girls' school. She studied at St Peter's College, Oxford, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, proceeding to a Master of Arts (MA Oxon) degree under the statutes and customs of the university. She later studied for ordination at Cranmer Hall, Durham University. Lane was ordained in the Church of England as a deacon in 1993 and as a priest in 1994.

Meghan Trainor's Sassy "Title (Deluxe Edition)" CD

categories: ,

GIRRLZ Music: When she was still in high school, singer/songwriter Meghan Trainor landed a deal with a Nashville music publishing company and started writing songs for artists from all corners of the music world. A multi-instrumentalist who put out three albums on her own by the age of 17, the 20-year-old Massachusetts native has penned tracks for everyone from Grammy-winning country superstars Rascal Flatts and Grammy-nominated country artist Hunter Hayes to reggae/rock/R&B group Common Kings and Hot Chelle Rae singer Ryan Follesé. Recently signed to Epic Records, Meghan is now gearing up to release a debut album that brings her intense flair for indelible melody to her own blend of throwback hip-hop, classic pop, and beat-heavy Caribbean music.
A couple years into her publishing deal, Meghan came up with “All About That Bass,” a super-playful but unapologetic self-empowerment anthem for ladies who don’t fit the standard beauty ideal. The song is now her debut single as an artist for Epic Records. “Writing that song, I was thinking about girls today and how there’s even more pressure to be thin now, because of Instagram and selfies and that constant competition,” she says, noting that the message of “All About That Bass” is to “love your body no matter what.” With songs addressing everything from drunk-texting and the walk of shame to dating anxiety and post-breakup heartache, there’s no shortage of “All About That Bass”-style honesty on Meghan’s debut album.
